I went to the bank today and was helped by a young woman in her 20's who had all the signs of needing to change her diet. Pallid, slightly puffy face. About 10-15 pounds overweight with a squishy middle. Limp hair. And acne. I wanted so badly to tell her to "go Paleo" but I don't preach, and I didn't. But I'm going to put this info up here in case it helps someone. In case it helps you.
Acne is not there because you're a teenager. It's not just bad luck. It's not just genetic because your parents had it. It's your diet.
Acne is caused by dairy products and sugar.
And not just sugar that goes in your mouth, but food that becomes sugar in your body - bread, rice, cereal, pasta and flour. When you eat Paleo you eat no dairy or sugar. You eat no food that becomes sugar in your body.
Nutritional deficiencies can make acne worse, including not having a healthy levels of omega-3 anti-inflammatory fats in your diet. When you eat Paleo it's designed to give you healthy omega-3 levels. And you aren't eating grains which cause gut problems that lead to poor mineral absorption and nutritional deficiencies. Plus you are eating food that actually has minerals in it, unlike grains which don't.
And to top it all off, saturated fats, trans fats and too much omega-6 (like soy oil, corn oil and processed vegetable oils) cause inflammation that stimulates pimple follicles. When you eat Paleo you do not eat any of these fats - you eat fantastic fats like coconut and avocado and olive oil.
Basically, the dairy-free, sugar-free, good-fat Paleo diet is an anti-acne diet. Naturally.
I see young adults with horrible acne. The kind that is red and angry and that scars your face for life. I want to run past them and call out "you have a diary problem!" but I hold myself back. I really, really do.
But here, on this site, you are seeking information and here it is: eat Paleo, have clear skin. It's as simple as that. Except for those first 4 days when you go through grain and sugar and caffeine detox. That is not simple and frankly, it sucks. But once you get past that little bump, the rest is smooth sailing. Just as smooth as your amazing, clear and healthy skin will be.
It is my hope that this information gets passed around. Prom season or photo day might inspire someone to clear up their skin by eating Paleo. An upcoming wedding or job promotion might motivate someone to clear up their skin by eating Paleo. Just the hope that they can look in the mirror and like what they see might spur someone on to clear up their skin by eating Paleo. Just to try it. To try it and see for themselves.
Pass it on.
I've read so many articles on this but here is one you can look at that sums it up nicely.
I like the easy Paleo stuff.
