I've been Paleo for a year now and believe me, it wasn't always easy. It used to take me hours to go grocery shopping. I'd be there standing in the aisles reading label after label..... and that was after spending hours at home researching on the internet what to eat while making meal plans. Except when I didn't plan ahead, which was usually the case, and we lived on bacon and eggs - again.
Today I did something spur-of-the-moment. Something I used to do without thinking. On my way home from a class I just popped into the grocery store. No shopping list cross-referenced by aisle. No getting out my iPhone out to look up "is mustard Paleo?" I just zipped in and out, almost mindlessly, just like I used to do before I went Paleo.
It was on the way home that it hit me. I have arrived. Then I looked back at the last year and thought - what was that? What was that "going Paleo" thing I just did? That's when I realized:
Going Paleo is like moving to a foreign country.
You don't know the language.
Omega 6? Mono-unsaturated-what?
You have no GPS and don't know where you are going.
Which store has coconut butter? They have a raw food section in Whole Foods Grocery? Find a local ranch for meat? Huh?
You don't know the customs.
I'm going to a birthday party, do I tell them in advance I won't eat the cake? How do I handle Christmas dinner with my relatives?
You might not even have any friends.
Just kidding. There's always me. ;)
Everything you do, everywhere you go, it takes more time, effort and concentration. It's true. Especially if you didn't know how to cook, like me. But it's worth it, because, as my husband just called out from the kitchen, "It's a country that has much lower obesity." LOL!
But like with any move, eventually you get into the rhythm of it.
You learn the language. You celebrate the holidays. You figure out how to drive on the opposite side of the street. Or, if you are in London to "mind the gap" (my favorite). But this time, while you are traveling, you get to enjoy the benefits of eating Paleo, too - being a healthier, leaner, more vibrant and alive you. Yay! :)
I like the easy Paleo stuff.
