Dental Health

or... Why We Don't Use Toothpaste

We don't use toothpaste in our house any more and our teeth and gums have never been better.

After much experimentation, here is what works best for us: (it even healed "the first cavity" in the kid who was not on board with the program.  Now she is.)
  • Floss.  Don't go to bed with food particles in your mouth (use dental tape - thin floss cuts gums)  (You can also use an irrigator if you need it)
  • Dry Brush.  It gets the most stuff off of your teeth.  2 minutes.
  • Brush with sea salt (NOT table salt).  The salt breaks apart the bacteria in your mouth naturally.  Brushing with it gets the sea salt between your teeth, on your gums, everywhere.
  • Rinse with Xylitol.  Get the kind that is made from birch, not corn, to keep it Paleo.  We use Health Garden Real Birch Xylitol.
  • Don't use toothpaste! It coats your mouth so your saliva can't heal your teeth and gums while you sleep.
  • Rinse with Xylitol after meals, if you're home.

By breaking apart the bacteria in your mouth and not having food particles in there while you sleep, your saliva will heal gums and even heal teeth while you sleep. Toothpaste doesn't remove the cause of gum disease, this does.

********

It all started when my husband had a tooth abscess.  He knew the dentist would give him a root canal which he did not want.  He has been particular about flossing and brushing his whole adult life and was feeling angry about the situation. "If our bones heal when we break them, why don't our teeth heal?" he wondered.  So he did research.  He dug deep.

What he found was that toothpaste coats your teeth and prevents your saliva, which contains all your mouth needs to heal, from working to heal you all night long.  He rinsed with sea salt and water often, stopped using toothpaste and healed his abscess naturally.

We started our family on the program.  My 7 year old daughter's teeth got 3-4 shades whiter and a cavity that had started to form healed itself. No fillings needed.  Our gums are healthier.  Dentist trips are easy since there is minimal need to scrape or poke since the teeth are much cleaner from any buildup, etc.  In fact, since we started using only salt, I forgot to schedule a dentist appointment for myself.  I thought I only missed one 6-month appointment but when I showed up I found out I had skipped 2.5 years.  What?

"Well, this is it," I thought, "either this salt-thing works or I'm screwed."

In I went into the dentist's chair.  Some x-rays, some cleaning and poking, some flossing and... that was it.  Nothing amiss.  Not one thing.  Seriously... salt rocks.

Here is the link to the audio interview with the dentist my husband found:
http://www.oneradionetwork2.com/mp3/health/dental/nara_robert_dds_dental_prevention_methods_cavaties_december_03_09.mp3

His name is Robert Nara.  Here is his website http://www.oramedia.com/

It's an hour long interview but I recommend listening to it because it's sooooo helpful to hear him talk about it and share how he discovered it and why it works.

Gluten & Teeth (If You Have Mouthfuls of Cavities)

(This I wrote for a mom who's kid had a mouth full of 10 cavities at once.)

Gluten intolerance and massive amounts of cavities are linked.  Here is one story of a kid who had a mouth full of cavities how it was a gluten intolerance: http://curezone.com/forums/am.asp?i=1112642

That many cavities at once time is often a diet thing if the body isn't getting enough nutrients and the teeth are decaying because of it.

I don't know what you would do with fully formed cavities.... but I found this web page that talks about Dr. Nara explaining how much a tooth that is already decayed can heal itself.  http://mizar5.com/heal.htm
